Reverb Gamers Prompt #13

Atlas Games is doing this thing called “Reverb Gamers 2012″, with 31 question prompts to kick off 2012. I’m going to post one up each day, including weekends, throughout January. I invite you to do the same! And check out @ReverbGamers on Twitter or Facebook.

REVERB GAMERS 2012, #13: Who’s the best GM/storyteller/party leader you’ve ever had? What made him/her so great?

Focusing on GMs, I would have to choose between Carl Rigney & Paul Tevis, and I won’t. I have been blessed with many find GMs over the years, but it’s from Carl & Paul that I’ve learned the most.

Paul’s the person who introduced me to returning questions. I remember one game where I asked: “Is there anywhere where I could duck for cover?”

His response: “I don’t know. Is there?” He would tease out details, and create a sense that those elements, while tactical, were also narrative.

Carl has taught me to power in picking up throwaway lines and running with it to make it real and, often, dangerous. I wish I had a good example off the top of my head, but I don’t, so you should just imagine something mindblowing here.

<insert your mind being blown>

I know, right? Paul & Carl have many tricks, and by watching & gaming with them, I have learned to be a better GM.

    I’ve gamed with Carl since 1988. The thing I always enjoy about his games is he has a knack for evoking the feel of a genre from the jump, and he has a penchant for creating real moral quandaries to challenge characters with in which all options seem valid and defensible depending on vantage point. Good stuff.

    In a Monsterhearts game, Carl picked up a throwaway character generation detail; that my emo Fey had a best friend just as nerdy and loser as I was. The best friend really wanted to date the Witch and wanted my help, not only did this drive the whole plot for my character, but we had an invented a nerdy bro-handshake, had invented some “those were good times” backstory, and proclaimed that “girls were scary and we wanted to get to know them”. I really bonded with this NPC in a way I had never done in any other game, and this happened in five minutes.
