REVERB GAMERS 2012, #15: People often talk about the divide between what happens “in game” and “in real life.” Do you maintain that divide in your own play, or do you tend to take what happens to your character personally? Why?
I don’t take what happens to my character personally. And I don’t play with those people. I’ll take emotionally mature folks, thank you very much.
That said, if it’s clear that someone is personally attacking me through play, or is violating a stated line, I will call on that. I’ll leave, or I’ll kick the motherfucker out. And given my extreme low tolerance for “that’s what my guy would do” and similar, you can best believe that I will not put up with someone doing that to someone else while I’m at the table, player or GM or whatever.
Sometimes, accidents happen, and those are worth talking out lest things fester and become bitter.
So, no, I don’t take roleplaying personally, but I will take personally people being shitty to each other and trying to use “but it’s roleplaying” as an excuse to allow it.
But given that I’m not particularly competitive, and that I’ll often play a heel because heels are interesting to me, I suppose that’s not surprising.
